Safety Awareness is Critical to Preventing Work-Related Injuries in New Jersey
The first week in May is North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. This continent-wide initiative spans Canada, Mexico and the United States, raising awareness about the seriousness of injuries in the workplace. NAOSH’s goal is to “focus the attention of employers, employees, the general public and all partners in occupational safety and health on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community.”
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the following major factors contribute to workplace injuries:
- Working conditions with poor lighting or poor environmental hygiene
- Lack of protective elements such as missing guard rails on walkways
- Poorly maintained or misused equipment
- Unclear safety procedures or lack of safety training
- Unsafe walking surfaces
New Jersey’s Workers’ Compensation Law (Title 34, Chapter 15) ensures those employees who suffer work-related injuries, receive workers’ compensation benefits. As long as you go to the authorized doctor, the workers’ compensation insurance company will pay for all of your medical bills. If you are out of work for at least eight (8) days, your company will pay 70% of your wages, “tax free,” up to a state maximum. When you have reached the maximum medical improvement through treatment, you may be entitled to a permanency award if you have permanent injuries.
Many work-related injuries are attributed to construction site accidents, slip and fall accidents, truck accidents, and car accidents, which often involve a third party or outside contractor. If a third-party and/or outside contractor caused or contributed to your accident, you may also be able to bring a claim for your damages from that person or company as well. These cases are often complex and require a thorough evaluation. Therefore, it is very important to seek the advice of our qualified and experienced New Jersey Personal Injury Attorneys.
