What does AWW mean under workers’ comp? (Average Weekly Wage)
When you apply for and receive workers’ compensation benefits, the benefits you receive will be based on the amount of money you earn. This is referred to as your average weekly wage, or AWW. To determine what your AWW is, you add up your total income for the most recent six months and divide that figure by 26.
The concept of AWW takes into account that not everyone earns the same amount of money per week. Whether it be varying hours per day or days per week, or changing rates of pay for performing different duties, the AWW calculation will take all of this into consideration. For example, if you normally work five days per week, but work six days one week per month, your average weekly wage will reflect that, on average, you work 5.25 days per week (five days, plus .25 days per week, assuming there are four weeks in a month).
While the amount of benefits you receive will be based on your AWW, there are some limitations. For example, you cannot receive more than 75 percent of the statewide average weekly wage (SAWW). The SAWW changes each year. In 2021, the SAWW is $1,291.42. At the same time, your weekly benefits cannot be less than 20 percent of the SAWW.
