Mesothelioma Lawyers in New Jersey

At the Todd J. Leonard Law Firm, we understand that if you are dealing with mesothelioma as a result of working with asbestos, you deserve compensation for the damage it has caused. Our mesothelioma lawyers have a proven history of success. Whether you were exposed to asbestos while on the job or through some other indirect manner, let us represent your claim and protect your rights. We are considering a person with asbestos exposure or talcum powder exposure who is later diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Depending on the type of mesothelioma you are facing, the symptoms will appear differently. Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms include unexplained weight loss, pain and swelling in the abdominal region, as well as lumps near the abdomen. Pleural mesothelioma is often accompanied by shortness of breath, odd lumps of tissue around your chest, chest pain, coughing, and unusual weight loss. Pericardial mesothelioma may result in chest pain and difficulty breathing, since it has to do with the region around the heart.

Understanding Mesothelioma

This type of malignant cancer is caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers, which can be inhaled or ingested without a person realizing it. Though it can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years for any signs or symptoms to surface, mesothelioma has been directly linked to asbestos exposure. In fact, the association between asbestos exposure and lung problems has been known for hundreds of years.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are three different types of mesothelioma:

  1. Peritoneal mesothelioma: This is found in the abdominal cavity, or the peritoneum.
  2. Pericardial mesothelioma: Found in the pericardium, the lining of the heart.
  3. Pleural mesothelioma: Occurs in the lining of the lungs, also known as the pleura.

Pleural mesothelioma accounts for 70% of the mesothelioma cases, making it the most common form of this disease.

Is Asbestos Still a Problem?

Though the inherent dangers were discovered several years ago, asbestos is still not completely banned in the United States. While the use and manufacturing of it are strictly regulated, many occupations can still lead to unhealthy amounts of exposure, causing asbestosis, a chronic respiratory disease or the deadly cancer of mesothelioma.

Additionally, there is still a serious risk for household exposure due to the fact that many older homes were built with construction products and materials containing asbestos. Family members of workers who were exposed to asbestos may also be harmed by coming into contact with clothes covered in the dust.

Though many jobs are now improving their safety standards, the workers who were previously exposed are still suffering. This means that if you are suffering from mesothelioma cancer or asbestosis, you may be able to file a claim for further compensation.

Some of the most hazardous occupations with a possibility of asbestos exposure include:

  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Installing flooring
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Roof installation
  • Insulators
  • Refinery work
  • Plumbers
  • Railroad workers
  • Shipyard workers
