Do I need to have a New Jersey motorcycle license to ride my bike?
Yes, you are required to have a valid New Jersey motorcycle license.
If you are out-of-state and already have a motorcycle license from another state, it is honored in New Jersey. It is mandatory to wear a helmet at all times while riding in New Jersey.
To obtain a motorcycle license, you need to be at least 17, and pass a written and visual test. If you pass those tests, you fill out an application for a motorcycle learner’s permit. Your permit is only issued once you meet the New Jersey’s 6-Point ID Verification Program and if you pay your permit fee. The permit is valid for 90 days. During the 90-day period, you are allowed to ride and practice with licensed motorcyclists.
When you get your permit, you can book a road test, however, there is a 20-day wait to take the test, calculated from the day you got your permit. Once you pass the test, you pay for your four-year license.
