What are the most common motorcycle injuries?
Motorcycle accidents are often much more serious than other types of motor vehicle accidents. In large part, this is because motorcycles offer much less protection to riders than cars provide to passengers.
Below is a brief description of some of the most common types of motorcycle accident injuries and how they occur:
Head Injuries: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are not only prevalent after a motorcycle accident, but they are also the most serious type of injury. While wearing a helmet is always a good idea, there is no guarantee that it will prevent a severe head injury.
Back Injuries: After a motorcycle accident, the rider is almost always thrown from the bike. If the rider lands on their back, this can cause broken spinal bones, damaged discs and even spinal cord damage. In moderate cases, this can result in severe pain that goes away with time. However, depending on the severity of the damage, spinal injuries can also cause lifelong paralysis.
Road Rash: Road rash is used to describe skin damage caused when the skin slides across a hard, uneven surface, such as asphalt. In a motorcycle accident, when the rider falls off the bike and comes into contact with the road, they will continue to travel along the road’s surface until coming to a stop. In many cases, the friction between the road and the rider’s body can cause severe skin damage, even if they are wearing pants or protective clothing.
Broken Bones: Fractured bones caused by a motorcycle accident most often occur when the rider falls off the bike, colliding with the ground, especially at high speeds. Riders can also suffer broken bones as they slide into a stationary object, such as a curb or traffic sign, after falling off the motorcycle. While some broken bones heal completely with time and treatment, others can present injured riders with a lifetime of lingering pain and limited function.
