What does MMI mean in workers’ comp? (Maximum Medical Improvement)

In workers’ compensation lingo, MMI refers to maximum medical improvement. Maximum medical improvement is the point at which no further medical care will improve your condition. In other words, your employer is required to pay for your medical treatment after a workplace injury as long as additional treatment is needed for your recovery. Once additional medical treatment won’t improve your condition, the employer no longer needs to pay for medical care costs.

Once you reach MMI, you are no longer eligible to receive temporary total disability benefits. For example, assume you are injured in a serious car accident while on the job and suffer a back injury. Initially, your doctor runs diagnostic tests to determine the extent of the damage. Your doctor determines that surgery isn’t going to help, given the type of injury, but orders a course of physical therapy. After two weeks of PT, your condition improves. However, after five more weeks, you reach a plateau and stop seeing any improvement. Your doctor still believes that surgery is not necessary and determines that you’ve reached maximum medical improvement. In this case, your employer will no longer be on the hook for your medical expenses, and you will stop receiving temporary disability benefits.

However, this does not mean that you are without options. Once you reach MMI, you can seek PTD or PPD benefits, depending on the nature of your disability.
