What does TTD mean in workers’ comp? (Temporary Total Disability)

When the term TTD comes up while discussing workers’ compensation, it refers to temporary total disability benefits. TTD benefits are one of the three different types of income-replacement benefits available through the workers’ compensation system. An injured worker can receive TTD benefits if they are disabled for more than seven days.

The amount of TTD benefits paid to an injured worker will depend on their earnings. Typically, a worker’s TTD benefits equal 70 percent of their average weekly wage. However, regardless of how much you make, you cannot receive more than 75 percent of the statewide average weekly wage. At the same time, you will not receive less than 20 percent of the statewide average weekly wage.

An injured worker will continue to receive TTD benefits throughout the time they are unable to work and under active medical care. Thus, there are two ways that TTD benefits terminate. First, if the injured employee goes back to work. Even if you return to work in a limited capacity, it will affect your workers’ compensation benefits. The second way TTD benefits end is if a worker reaches maximum medical improvement (MMI).

A worker has reached MMI when doctors determine that no further medical care will help improve the worker’s condition. While reaching MMI will terminate TTD benefits, a partially or totally disabled worker may then qualify for permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits or permanent total disability (PTD) benefits.
